The Five ‘C’s focus on how Blackpool parents and families have through their interaction with Better Start strengthened aspects of each area. The guided questions were connected to finding out how far and in what way the Blackpool Better Start programmes had impacted in these areas. This development is measured by evidencing changes to their attitudes, behaviours, knowledge, and skill sets through a story-led recall approach.

Community.
Better Start brings people together, creating welcoming groups where families connect through neighbourhoods, online communities, and shared experiences.

Communication.
We wanted to see if Better Start projects helped people feel more confident in communicating—expressing themselves clearly, understanding others, and handling conversations in everyday places like work, school, or the doctor’s office.

Connection.
Better Start brings parents and families in Blackpool together, helping them connect with people, communities, and opportunities for learning, work, and support—whether online or in person—so they feel supported, empowered, and part of something bigger.

Capacity.
We wanted to explore whether taking part in Better Start projects helped people build their personal capacity—the skills to make decisions, follow instructions, seek help, and navigate life's ups and downs with confidence and strong communication skills.
